Animation Ireland, the trade association for Irish animation studios, created the Irish Animation Awards to celebrate and recognize the talent in the Irish animation, VFX, and gaming industries. This year’s awards is Animation Ireland’s fifth award ceremony to acknowledge and honor the outstanding creative talent in the Irish Animation Industry. This year’s ceremony takes place in Galway on Saturday, May 27th. In a record year for the Irish animation sector, 53 Irish productions across 22 categories were nominated for an award.
Hosting the 2023 award ceremony, which will be back live and in person for the first time since 2019, is Irish TV star Baz Ashmawy. Ashmawy is best known for 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy, which was first broadcast on Sky 1 and earned him an International Emmy Award for Best Non-Scripted Entertainment. Baz is a writer, actor, and radio presenter. Ashmawy was born in Libya and is half-Egyptian, living in Dublin.
Winners of each category will receive a statuette designed by animator, filmmaker, and teacher Eimhín McNamara. The award resembles a Phenakistoscope, an early animation device that creates an illusion of motion.
